Do Shared Spaces Need Shared Traditions?

When our downtown mall draped itself in commercial christmas lights canada, it created an open invitation for everyone to come together. People stopped for photos, kids laughed while running around, and suddenly, the space became more than just a shopping center it became part of our community. Do you think public spaces should focus more on creating such experiences, or is it just seasonal hype that fades too quickly?
